Tragedy struck on Thursday, November 5, 2020, when fire razed a petroleum tank farm belonging to multinational energy company, Oando Plc.

Unmask NG learnt that the incident happened at Ijora Badia area of Lagos.

Confirming the incident, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said emergency responders, had been deployed in the area to salvage the situation.

“There is a fire incident at the tank farm at Oando Depot in Ijora Badia. The agency has activated its emergency response plan and all relevant stakeholders have commenced appropriate measures to combat the flames and prevent secondary incidents;

“Lagosians are urged to remain calm. Further updates will be communicated,” he stated.

Also confirming the fire outbreak, OVH Energy, which handles the Oando retail brand in West Africa, reiterated the company’s commitment to safety.

“Safety remains our priority at OVH Energy as we operate under high safety standards to curb incidences of fire outbreaks as well as other health and safety risks from happening at any of our stations,” the firm stated.

While efforts were ongoing to put out the fire, Unmask NG, at the time of filing this report, could not establish the cause of the inferno.

Lagos Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat has announced that the state government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would support owners of stores that were vandalised by hoodlums during the recent civil unrest in some parts of the state.

Hamzat, who took to his Twitter page to make this promise, shared a link to a form, and advised vandalised store owners to fill.

The form requirement includes the name of the business, location of the business, the estimated amount of loss, photos of damages, number of employees, amongst other information.

“if you are a Lagos based business and your store got looted or vandalized this week, please fill the form by @LSETFhttps://t.co/lwPiXvFzTp. Let’s do what we can to support you,” he wrote.

Prior to when the deputy governor made this disclosure, Sanwo Olu had expressed his commitment to rebuild the state, saying the state had activated the process of healing from the large scale destruction after moving around the state to inspect assets destroyed by the hoodlums taking stock of losses to the government and private business.

His words: “My heart bled after I went out today for a first hand assessment of the destruction of assets of government and private properties. The level of destruction observed indicated that the violence was more than just a peaceful protest and agitations for police reforms. The proportion of devastation is a lot. This is not the Lagos that was handed over to me in May 29, 2019;

“Moving forward from destruction, we have to continue the process of healing ourselves. We need to stop some of our citizens still using social media to instigate or incite the people. It will not be under my watch that we will lose the city that has the largest economy in the entire black nation. Enough is enough. I have moved around and I saw that our people want peace. On this we are committed to bringing lasting peace back to the state.”

It came as a shock to many Nigerians as suspected hoodlums hijacked the peaceful protest of concerned Nigerians who took to the street to make a case against police brutality, and vandalised properties, and looting shops and stores across the state.

Many private and public businesses like –Filmhouse Cinemas, GTBank, amongst others, have suffered losses, running to millions of naira.

As expected, when things return back to their normal state, businesses will start to take stock of their losses and someone will have to bear the loss.

However, this assistance coming from Lagos state is a good development in recovering and rebuilding the state, knowing fully well that quite a number of people do not insure their businesses.

As #EndSARS protest continues across Lagos, the state has lost a sum of N234 million to tollgates closure. This is according to a reliable report.

The figure was obtained from the daily and monthly targets set by the state government for the tollgates and managed by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC).

“Sport Utility Vehicles pay N250 at the Admiralty Toll plaza, while saloon cars pay N200. At the Ikoyi link bridge, the toll gate for SUVs, Minivans and light trucks is 400;

“Heavy duty trucks/ buses with two or more heavy axles pay N1000 at the admiralty circle plaza on the Lekki express way,” a source as LCC was quoted as saying.

Corroborating the LCC source’s claim, a Lagos State Commissioner who pleaded anonymity disclosed that the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge is expected to generate about N10 million daily, while the Admiralty circle plaza along the Lekki-Epe Expressway is meant to generate at least N16.6 million per day.

The commissioner further revealed that the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge was expected to generate at least a total of N300 monthly while the Admiralty circle plaza to generate N500 monthly.

“At least 80,000 cars use the tollgates every day. The figure could be higher or lower depending on the day of the week. However, since the protester started, Lekki tollgate has been completely shut down while the Ikoyi one has been left permanently open for people to use without payment,” the commissioner said.

For 16 days now, protesters across the country have been agitating for the end of police brutality and fair governance from the Nigerian leadership. This movement has since led thousands of people to the streets, where they exercised their civil rights to protest.

Since Saturday, October 3, 2020, the #EndSARS protesters have particularly stationed themselves at Lekki tollgate, paralysing the state government’s ability to collect levy from motorists.
