As Ikoyi building collapse continues to make news headlines across the country, the names and ages of the incident’s survivors have been released.

It would be recalled that on Monday, November 1, 2021, a 21-storey building situated at Gerrard Road, in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, collapsed.

While no less than 20 people have already been confirmed dead, several other persons were believed to still be trapped in the rubble, including the Managing Director, Fourscore Heights Limited, Femi Osibona.

Unmask NG understands that Osibona’s Fourscore Heights Limited is the company developing the giant structure.

But providing update on the building collapse on Wednesday, November 3, during his second visit to the incident’s scene, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, said, so far, there are only nine survivors.

According to the governor, while three of the survivors have been discharged, nine others are still receiving treatment at the Lagos Marina Hospital.

See below the names and ages of the survivors of Ikoyi building collapse

1. Odutan Timileyin, 26-year-old man.

2. Ahmed Kenleku, a 19-year-old man from Cotonou, Benin Republic.

3. Sunday Monday, a 21-year-old man who suffered a leg fracture.

4. Adeniran Mayowa, a 37-year-old man who suffered a hip injury.

5. Shola Bade Nurudeen, 33-years old man, who has a pelvic injury.

6. Waliu Lateef, 32-year-old.

Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu had suspended Gbolahan Oki, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

His suspension came on the heels of a statement he made that the agency he headed only approved a 15-storey building for Fourscore Heights, and not the 21-storey structure that later collapsed.

The statement was quickly tackled by Femi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, who stated that LASBCA under Oki’s watch approved the 21-storey building.

In a statement obtained by Unmask NG, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that Oki would have to go on an indefinite suspension, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation on the Ikoyi building collapse.

“The government will surely find out what went wrong and punish those indicted. The governor, as a first step, has directed that the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Gbolahan Oki, an architect, be suspended from work immediately. The suspension is indefinite,” Gbenga Omotosho, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, quoted Sanwo-Olu as saying in the statement.

No less than 4,000 unemployed youths in Lagos, will get N40,000 monthly stipends from Lagos state government, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved an internship programme for them.

Yetunde Arobieke, the Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, made this disclosure via a statement she shared on social media.

In the statement, she wrote: “As part of efforts to reduce the rate of unemployment in Lagos state, Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has approved Internship Programme for 4000 unemployed graduates in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of the present administration and the Youth Development Programme of the State.”

Arobieke explained that the internship programme is designed to give candidates the opportunity to develop employability and work-ready skills that are needed in securing gainful employment.

According to her, producing graduates with relevant employable skills is important because the labour market has become a lot more competitive. With employers looking for people who are flexible and have the ability to undertake multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

To qualify for this programme, you need to consider having the followings:

Applicants must possess NYSC certificates or letters of exemption

Applicant must be registered residents of the state with LAGOS state residents Registration Agency LASRRA

The graduate internship placement programme is for a period of six months .of which a monthly stipend of 40,000 will be paid for the duration of the internship.

Interested candidates can apply through the dedicated link for the programme: http://gipplasg.lagosstate.gov,ng

An applaudable programme?

The graduate internship programme is expected to play a major role in curbing the rate of unemployment in Lagos. It will provide candidates the opportunity to develop key skills that will boost their employability and will help them secure gainful employment.

At the end of the programme, it is expected that beneficiaries would have gained enough valuable work experience, built up their professional skills and would have been exposed to entrepreneurial opportunities, which will strengthen their professional skills and interpersonal relationship.

Lagos Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat has announced that the state government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would support owners of stores that were vandalised by hoodlums during the recent civil unrest in some parts of the state.

Hamzat, who took to his Twitter page to make this promise, shared a link to a form, and advised vandalised store owners to fill.

The form requirement includes the name of the business, location of the business, the estimated amount of loss, photos of damages, number of employees, amongst other information.

“if you are a Lagos based business and your store got looted or vandalized this week, please fill the form by @LSETFhttps://t.co/lwPiXvFzTp. Let’s do what we can to support you,” he wrote.

Prior to when the deputy governor made this disclosure, Sanwo Olu had expressed his commitment to rebuild the state, saying the state had activated the process of healing from the large scale destruction after moving around the state to inspect assets destroyed by the hoodlums taking stock of losses to the government and private business.

His words: “My heart bled after I went out today for a first hand assessment of the destruction of assets of government and private properties. The level of destruction observed indicated that the violence was more than just a peaceful protest and agitations for police reforms. The proportion of devastation is a lot. This is not the Lagos that was handed over to me in May 29, 2019;

“Moving forward from destruction, we have to continue the process of healing ourselves. We need to stop some of our citizens still using social media to instigate or incite the people. It will not be under my watch that we will lose the city that has the largest economy in the entire black nation. Enough is enough. I have moved around and I saw that our people want peace. On this we are committed to bringing lasting peace back to the state.”

It came as a shock to many Nigerians as suspected hoodlums hijacked the peaceful protest of concerned Nigerians who took to the street to make a case against police brutality, and vandalised properties, and looting shops and stores across the state.

Many private and public businesses like –Filmhouse Cinemas, GTBank, amongst others, have suffered losses, running to millions of naira.

As expected, when things return back to their normal state, businesses will start to take stock of their losses and someone will have to bear the loss.

However, this assistance coming from Lagos state is a good development in recovering and rebuilding the state, knowing fully well that quite a number of people do not insure their businesses.

Former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu has denied being involved in the Lekki massacre of peaceful protesters in Lagos on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

Recall that on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, dozens of people suffered life-threatening injuries while others are feared dead, as armed men in military uniforms stormed an #EndSARS protest ground at Lekki Tollgate area of the state.

Following the incident, critics and concerned Nigerians have pointed fingers at the former governor, accusing him of being the orchestrator due to the loss he has recorded from the tollgate blockage since the protest began.

But reacting to that, Tinubu said it’s not fair to accuse him of the murdering of innocent lives. Tinubu said, “I will never be part of any carnage. I will never be part of that.” Them he queries, “why will they shoot live bullets?”

The former Lagos governor maintained that he has no property whatsoever at the tollgate, which is managed by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC). In his words: “I have no dime, no kobo of investment in the toll gate.”

Workers were left with no choice but to return to their various homes today (Monday, October 19, 2020). This was as #EndSARS protesters in thousands blocked major roads in Lagos.

Unmask NG observed those who were driving to work were stuck in traffic, as others who commutes to their workplaces were stranded and made to return home.

According to an eye witness, the protesters parked their vehicles on the roads, restricting the movement of workers and commuters. “You need to see as people were made to walk long distances because vehicles were not allowed to move. We pleaded with them to allow us to pass, they refused us from that even despite telling them that we subscribe to their agitations. I like what the protesters are doing, and I think the energy should keep burning,” she said.

Similar, a commuter who identified himself as Kelvin Samson told Unmask NG that she was left with no choice than to call him employer for permission to work remotely. “I had to call my boss and inform him of the situation. Surprisingly, to me, he told me he couldn’t make it to the office as well due to similar experience,” Samson said.

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos had appealed to the #EndSARS protesters to vacate the roads, as his administration has shown commitment in addressing the issues raised so far.

He made the appeal while swearing-in members of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution at the State House in Marina.

His words: “We have shown unprecedented commitment to the complete overhaul of the Nigeria Police. The inauguration of this Judicial Panel of Inquiry is only the first step in a long line of reformative actions that will lead to a thorough revamp and reorientation of the Nigeria Police. I believe that some of the actions we have taken should, to a large extent, show our sincerity and willingness to address all your concerns.

“Let me reiterate that I am on the side of the young people out there. I understand your pain and I know your concerns are genuine and legitimate. While we are able to immediately acquiesce to some of your demands, some others will require time. We ask you to bear with us as we dutifully work on your demands.

“I will, therefore, like to renew my appeal to you to suspend the protests and create an atmosphere for the resolution of all pending demands. I encourage everyone brutalised by the disbanded SARS, including the families of those who died, to present their case before this tribunal.”

There are possibilities that Primero Transport Services Ltd, the operator of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) may no longer serve Lagosians from Monday, May 25, 2020. This is according to a top official in the company.

The official disclosed that BRT may stop operating from Monday due to lack of diesel, amongst other logistics problems.

“Primero is planning to withdraw all its buses from the road from May 25. The company is running out of diesel.

“Suppliers have not been supplying diesel fully because the firm is owing them. The company is currently running at a loss.

“Primero will run out of the supply of diesel and other supplies by Monday. So it is not likely the buses will run,” the official was quoted as saying.

What you should know

Since the coronavirus lockdown order was lifted in Lagos, there have been complaints from members of the public over the shortage of BRT buses across different routes in the state.

Aside from the shortage of BRT buses, there have been long queues and a significant surge in waiting time at BRT stations across the state.

Possible solution and increase in transport fare

Lagosians should braceup for an increase in transport fare when they want to use BRT services. Going by a statement by Fola Tinubu, the Managing Director of the company, BRT can not sustain the existing business mode of operations due to the new laws of motoring in the state.

According to him, it already looks as if the BRT is running a social service for the people of Lagos.

His words; “The way we are operating now is as if we are just running a social service for the people.

“Twenty passengers in the bus on the same old fare is not sustainable. We are piling up losses that we need to address urgently.

“Creditors are calling us. We need to address that urgently. The way it is right now is not sustainable.

“That was why we have limited buses on the roads. Every bus that is going up and down now is incurring so much loss.”

What it means

Should it be that BRT will not operate in Lagos from Monday, there will be traffic congestion in the state, which will have negative effect on the productivity and earnings of Lagosians.

Recall that some months ago, the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration had placed a ban on the operation of commercial tricycles and motorcycles in the state.
