Popular singer David Adeleke otherwise known as Davido, has revealed that while he was in secondary school, his French teacher once told him that he would never make it in life.

In the course of a chat on Tea With Tay, Davido said the teacher made the statement because he was quite a bad boy as a kid.

According to him, while his peers at British International School (BIS) would go to ShopRite after school activities, he would rather go to Shogunle, a residential area that shares a boundary with Ikeja Along and Bolade, to have a good time.

“My French teacher in secondary school told me I won’t be anything in life. I’m not going to lie, I was a bad kid, but one with good intentions… I went to BIS, which is one of the most expensive in Lagos. So, after school all the students would go to Shoprite, but I would head to Shogunle. He was my mum’s driver, and my mum passed away, and he then went with his thing -gyming. I went to America, and came back. I saw him when I returned to Nigeria… I didn’t plan to be famous, I was only hoping so, but God did it,” the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) boss stated.

Speaking about his recent N1 million fundraising challenge, Davido said contrary to what many people may have thought, it was not a campaign, adding that the whole thing was unplanned as a matter of fact.

His words: “This is not a campaign, I was having a hair cut at the balcony, and we were drinking alcohol.. And because I have decided that it wasn’t safe to put out my account number, I initially didn’t want to do it. But I suddenly changed my mind. To the surprise of those around me that day, I just picked up my phone and pasted my account details on the internet, and the money started coming in immediately. When the money hit N200 million, I was so overwhelmed, such that I went to my room and I started crying. In that process, I thanked God for making me something in this life.“

The music star also spoke about the friends he recently lost, saying while there are many things to be grateful for as the year 2021 is concerned, his demised friends remain very close to his heart.

Popular singer, David Adeleke otherwise known as Davido, has vowed to make the just-concluded N1 million donation challenge a yearly commitment.

It would be recalled that a few days ago, the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) boss challenged his music industry friends to donate N1 million each to him for his birthday.

“We rise by lifting others abi? Me I don dey rise dey lifting others for the past 100 years. So, I want to know who my friends are. All of my friends one one million Naira. They said we are 30BG. If you don’t send your own, you out of here. You are gone (sic),” he stated in a video posted on his verified social media pages.

In a matter of hours, hundreds of millions were quickly garnered by the likes of Adekunle Gold, Teni, Zlatan, Mayorkun, amongst others.

However, contrary to the claim he made that he needed to raise N100 million to clear his newly-purchased Rolls-Royce car with Nigeria Customs Service (NSC), Davido, who said he was able to realise N200 million through the challenge, disclosed that all the money is going to Nigerian orphanages, irrespective of their geographical entity.

Saying he has added N50 million to the money donated, Davido said N250 million would be shared among the orphanages, adding that the donation challenge would continue on a yearly basis.

“My goal is to do the fundraising every year to celebrate my birthday and give back to people in need,” he said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has maintained silence as Wema Bank on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, flouted the Twitter ban.

It all started when singer Davido appealed to his fans, and friends to donate N1 million each to him in celebration of his fast-approaching birthday.

Shortly after making the post across his verified social media pages, the music star’s friends and fans started to donate N1 million individually to his Wema Bank account.

The money donated was surprisingly much, such that over N90 million was donated to the Wema Bank account in less than four hours.

The donation caused the bank to trend across all social media platforms, including Twitter.

Ecstatic about the free publicity, the financial institution took to Twitter for the first time in over six months that the federal government disclosed the controversial ban.

However, when Unmaskng.com put a call through to Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, for reaction and possible sanctions on the bank for floating the Twitter ban, he didn’t answer his phone, neither did he respond to the message from our correspondent.

Wema Bank, others comply to Twitter ban

Since when Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, disclosed that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government had effected the Twitter ban, many people in the country have been bypassing it with the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

According to Mohammed, following the ban, telecommunication companies in the country were directed to halt the accessibility of Twitter on their networks.

The Twitter ban, however, stopped many corporate organisations like Wema Bank, from using the micro-blogging site.

However, for the first time since Saturday, June 4, that the federal government announced that Twitter had been banned, the Deposit Money Bank (DMB) must have bypassed it like other Nigerians, with the use of VPNs, as it tweeted in reaction to Davido’s N1 million donation challenge.

Without minding what could happen for tweeting after the ban, the financial institution tweeted: “We heard your GOAT called our name. Well…”

Popular singer Mayowa Adewale, otherwise known as Mayorkun, has disclosed that none of the songs he has with Davido, his record label boss, fit into his new album, Back In Office.

Unmask NG understands that Mayorkun is a signee of the Fem singer’s imprint, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).

Speaking about his sophomore album, which would be released on Friday, October 29, 2021, Mayorkun explained that Davido is not featured on it considering the fact that the Back In Office body of work is not tailored to the kind of songs they both have together.

“Most people don’t know how creating an album works; sometimes, it’s a group of songs you’ve had way back and just compile together.

“The songs that we have together I don’t feel like it’s for this album but for a later time.

“I and Davido have songs together and it is not a situation that I took out his song for my album,” Mayorkun said as he discussed the project with OAP Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

Mayorkun’s Back In Office will premier three years after his debut album The Mayor of Lagos was released.

How Davido signed Mayorkun

Mayorkun, the son of Toyin Adewale, a veteran Nollywood actress, was a bank staff until 2016 when he posted the video of a cover he did to The Money, 2015 hit single Davido featured indigenous rapper Olamide on.

“I was bored at the office, a bank, one day; just while I was pressing my phone, I impulsively posted a video I had recorded, where I was playing the keyboard of one of Davido’s songs, The Money, on Twitter.

“I wasn’t expecting anything. It was on a Friday and I was supposed to resume work in another bank the following Monday. Well, Davido retweeted the video. And he later sent me a direct message asking if I had other things I did besides playing the keyboard. I told him I had some songs. I sent like six songs. He liked one of them. He said if he came back from ATL (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) he will sign me on. He collected my WhatsApp number. Because I was shaking, I typed the wrong number, but like they say, the rest is history,” Mayorkun was quoted as saying in an article published on Blue Print.

Since he joined the record label, Mayorkun and Davido have featured each other on quite a number of hit songs, that include –The Best, and Betty Butter.

In recent times, there has been a surge in the number of fraudulent cases that have swindled thousands of people in billions of naira. Especially in the corporate sector. Con artists are now leveraging the vulnerability of the media, celebrities, and social media influencers, to lure unsuspecting members of the public into investing in their schemes, only to later leave them stranded with unexplainable excuses when they were expecting returns on their investments. Damilare Famuyiwa reports…

When investment scheme Racksterl, was endorsed by singer David Adeleke otherwise known as Davido, many Nigerians believed that they were about to make fortunes just by putting a little of their money to work. Amongst the thousands of Nigerians, who on the music star recommendation, considered investing in Racksterli, was Yinka, a student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The young lady in her mid-20s had thought that with Racksterli, her success story was about to be written, especially with Davido convincing members of the public into believing that the investment scheme had come to stay and it was going to be a big win for those who could be part of it.

Surprisingly to many, Racksterli, which was not only endorsed by Davido but by other celebrities including Divine Ikubor widely known as Rema, Williams Uchemba, Bayegun Oluwatoyin who’s preferably referred to as Woli Arole, amongst others, did not last up to a year before its investors started taking to social media to lament how they have been scammed.

“My friend introduced me to Racksterli and while I was thinking about investing my money into it, I realised that Davido endorsed it, alongside other celebrities. So, I trusted them to invest in it. Now, I’m regretting my action,” Yinka lamented to this writer.

Racksterli is not only the investment scheme that was widely endorsed by notable Nigerians and later turned out to be fraudulent. Amongst many others, is Eatrich Farms, an agrotech portal that was endorsed by Nollywood thespian Muyiwa Ademola.

Like Racksterli, Eatrich Farms is also starving its investors of promised Return on Investments (ROI), a development that had made Ademola disassociate himself from the agrotech business. “This is to inform the general public that I Muyiwa Ademola (Mr. Authentic) has ceased to be the brand ambassador to Eatrich Farms. Any further use of my name by Eatrich Farms is unauthorised,” the actor wrote on his social media pages.

The craze to earn at the detriment of losing all

For Helen Adedokun, a brand manager and the host of ‘Memoir of a Naija Girl’, con artists are now leveraging the vulnerability of media and celebrities to lure unsuspecting people into their traps. “I honestly don’t think social media influencers and even the media vet the information contracted to them for publicity sake, before exposing their audiences to it. Although we have a few who do due diligence before giving publicity to products or services contracted to them, there are quite a lot of them who only care about the money they would be paid for promotion. Members of the public cannot and should not thoroughly trust influencers and the media because all most of them now care about is money,” she said.

Host of Memoir of a Naija Girl Helen Adedokun

Corroborating Adeniran’s claim, Esther Adekeye, a managing partner of Estol Africa, a public relations firm, told this writer that social media and the new media at large, are free for all. Her words: “We have a lot of unprofessional entertainers out there, including unserious content creators and social media influencers. It is a sad reality that people don’t know the ones with bankable reputations. All people care about is their numbers. Although we have some who can be trusted, there are too many of them who don’t even understand the ethics of what they are doing or the damage their celebrity statuses can cause.”

Speaking further, Adekeye said unaware to celebrities, content creators, and social media influencers, a bad product cannot be sold twice to a client. Hence, they need to ensure anything people are exposed to through them is bankable.

Why scams may not be so common before now

Veteran journalist Lekan Otufodunrin explained to this writer that during his time as a managing editor of The Nation newspaper, there was a process that every advertorial had to be subjected to, before being published. In his words: “Normally, every advertorial was supposed to go through the company secretary who’s also a lawyer. There were standard procedures in determining the advertorial that could fly for publication because sometimes they were used to publish libellous stuff. And most times, what we looked for was, to know whether we could be sued for an advert. It wasn’t enough for someone to say he wanted to bring money and advertise on our publication. Interestingly, the process wasn’t a new practise at The Nation where I worked, even as far back when I was working with Punch, there was a procedure for looking out for those adverts. They could be rejected if the content was found not to be right, libellous, or contained information that was not ethical. There was a scrutiny process for advertorial and I’m aware that some adverts have been rejected and in some cases, the owners have been asked to amend it in such a way that it would be publishable.”

Founder, Media Career Services, Lekan Otufodunrin

Advancing Otufodunrin’s explanation, singer Adeniyi Adewoyin who’s popularly known as Neophlames, said when he interned in a magazine during his schooldays, he was aware that mainstream traditional media prioritised reputation more compared to money. “Unlike now, con artists could not just walk into a news media house and disguise themselves like corporate individuals to float adverts. In fact, it was risky for them because I know some senior colleagues who were desperate for career success compared to making money, and if exposing you would be a hit for them, they wouldn’t mind. Interestingly, people trusted the media because of the efforts in place before any information was passed out,” he said.

Epilogue

While pointing out that investment schemes were not only what con artists have taken advantage of, Otufodunrin, a founder of media career services, noted that fake sexual enhancement drugs have been sold to people, “no thanks to the media.”

He, therefore, encouraged professionalism and smartness.

“As much as we need to survive, we should always remember that our integrity is at stake. We shouldn’t allow fraudulent people to use our platforms. Whether you are a content person, social media influencer, journalist, or news medium as the case may be, seek to understand the rules that guide what to do,” Otufodunrin added.

On her part, Adekeye cautioned celebrities, media, and social media influencers against endorsing and promoting the products and services that they have not fully vetted.

Popular singer, David Adedeji Adeleke, otherwise known as Davido has revealed what American artistes paid him to feature him in a song.

In a chat with Amplify Dot in an interview, the music star revealed that he earned no less than N27 million ($70,000) for a verse in the song.

“Okay. Listen, let me tell you. With Stevie, okay, Stevie Wonder‘s a legend, of course. If he met me, he wouldn’t do it. He would want to do it off the jump. But with labels, there’s always maybe a little fee, like some lawyer fee, lawyer fees, and stuff like that to get the paperwork done.

“But outside of that, nah (sic), we not doing none of that… Yo, right now, I’m charging American artists for songs. I am. I’m charging American artists for songs right now. Two American artists don pay me $70,000 for a verse,” he stated.

While explaining that money is the least that bothers him when it comes to working with artistes, he added: “At a point in my career I believed that, “Let’s just give him money. Let’s just give him money. Let’s just do the record.” But after a while it just never came into play anymore.

“That’s why I said the relationship with this, I’ll have a relationship with this artist, it’s very important. It’s past the music. Even apart from the music, having a relationship with them is very important so they don’t bring things like this last minute, “Oh, money.” A lot of them know I do it. A lot of them know my situation.

“I wouldn’t lie to you. I come from a background of money, but now, I mean, I make the best music ever. It’s like, “Let’s make music. That’s why we’re here.” Later on, when we make money from the music, I might be like, “Hey man, I just made $200,000 from that song. I don’t really need it. Yo, you can have it.”

Popular singer, David Adedeji Adeleke, otherwise known as Davido, has terminated his record label contract with up and coming singer, Lil frosh, over a domestic violence allegation.

It all started yesterday (Monday, October 6, 2020), when Mayoks Michael, the manager and brother of Gift Camile, a video vixen, called out Lil Frosh and accused him of domestic violence against Camile, whom he claimed is his girlfriend.

Lil Frosh became a trending topic on the Nigerian social media community after pictures of Camile’s sustained injuries surfaced the internet.

Michael said Lil Frosh had been assaulting Camile for more than a year, adding that sometimes the singer would record her naked and threaten to share it on the internet after assaulting her.

Camile’s manager wrote: “@thacutegeminme, my client and sister has suffered enough!!! We have kept quiet enough @lhilfrosh.

“You have done enough damage for almost a year now you have been in a relationship with my sister and client and you have brought her nothing but horror, pain and disaster.

“I remember the first time I found out about you beating her on Monday 22nd of June @official_lyta team reached out to me wanting to use her for his music video shoot but she kept on saying you didn’t like it not knowing you had beaten her to pulp and she couldn’t face the world with so much Bruise. Their team begged to double the money but she couldn’t take the job because of you.

“You created so much fear in her till she turned down the job, but you still didn’t stop on a particular day you called me and you were begging me for almost 3 hours on the phone telling me to talk to her just to get back to you. I begged her and you promised never to lay your horrible hands on her.

“She has lost so many jobs because of you. She has lost so many friendships because of you. You never wanted her to be friends or to even talk to anyone. You will turn the lights off to beat her and pour her water even record her and threaten to post it online.

“You broke her ring light. Broke her phone. Dragged her right in front of your house. I know how many times I’ve had to order Uber to take her home.

“@lhilfrosh you are very wicked. I’m tired of trying to protect your image while you continually ruin her and break her into pieces.

“She called one day crying that you were going to kill her and actually you were truly locking her inside preparing to beat not until I called her mom.

“You even recorded her naked! Threatening to post it after beating her bro @lhilfrosh you better be ready. You will pay for this !!! We are tired of your…”

In what Unmask NG thinks is a swift and smart response, Davido released a statement, where he disclosed that his record label contract with Lil Frosh as been terminated.

According to the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) boss, Lil Frosh’s contract was terminated as internal investigation carried out at the top level of his record label proves beyond reasonable doubt that Lil Frosh is guilty as accused.

He however maintained that his brand does not condone the act of violence.

Davido’s statement read: “In the light of recent allegation made against Mr. Sanni Goriola Wasiu AKA Lil Frosh we would like to state that as a record label, domestic violence is not a trivial matter and as such would not be condoned or supported. There is no excuse for the actions of Lil frosh and we understand that there’s nothing that can be said or done to revert the insensitivity shown.

“ Upon internal investigations carried out by the label, we are left with no option than to terminate the recording contract that exists between the label and Lil Frosh, effective immediately. We hereby immediately severe all affiliations with Mr Sanni Goriola Wasiu AKA Lil Frosh. Once again, we do not condone domestic violence and stand with all victims of domestic violence.”

Was the termination a smart move?

Domestic violence is a grievous crime that shouldn’t be condone in any form. Around the world today, domestic violence or assault against women is a serious crime. And it’s serious because it violates the fundamental human rights of women and often results in serious injury or death. Sadly, it often occurs when the abuser believes that abuse is an entitlement, and unlikely to be reported to relevant authorities.

In Lil Frosh’s case, Davido couldn’t allow the singer get away with the assault against Camile. This, Unmask NG, understands was due to its intensity and consequences.

With the calling out alone, the DMW brand had already been dragged into the mud, and it could have been worse for the record label in terms of losing fan base, and endorsement deals.

Understanding the consequence of doing business with an abuser, however, makes it difficult to disagree with Davido on the termination of Lil Frosh’s contract. Hopefully, this will serve as deterrent to other musicians who are engaging in similar acts.
