Anambra Election: How APGA’s Soludo Defeated APC, PDP, Others

Anambra Election: How APGA's Soludo Defeated APC, PDP, Others

As the supplementary election of the Anambra election was concluded on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, the governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) emerges winner.

Soludo’s emergence as the winner of the Anambra election was disclosed by the Independent National Electoral Commission‘s (INEC) Returning Officer of the Anambra Governorship Election, Prof Florence Obi.

Making the disclosure of the Anambra election in the early hours of Wednesday, November 10, at the INEC office in Awka, Anambra State, Obi stated: “That Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

Punch reports that Soludo, who was the apex bank governor between 2004 and 2009, was declared the winner after the November 6 election was declared inconclusive by INEC and after a supplementary election was held in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday. He won 19 of the 21 local governments areas including Ihiala LGA.

Sixty-one-year-old Soludo won with 112,229 votes beating Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 53,807 votes, and Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress who got 43,285 votes. Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party polled 21,261 votes came fourth.

Soludo’s walk to victory was paved with stony challenges including legal battles and intra-party squabbles but the Supreme Court in Abuja affirmed him as APGA governorship candidate. This was after the sacking of a former APGA candidate, Chukwuma Umeoji, by the court.

Umeoji, who is the current member of the House of Representatives representing Aguata Federal Constituency in Anambra State, was recently sacked by a court decision after his name had been listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission as APGA’s candidate.

The court then ordered INEC to replace Umeoji with Soludo as the validly elected candidate of APGA for the governorship election.

Also in April 2021 during the build-up to the election, Soludo narrowly escaped death when gunmen unleashed terror on him and his security aides during a town hall meeting in his hometown in Isuofia in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra.

Three of his police orderlies were killed during the attack which he described as “senseless”. Soludo dedicated his victory to the three policemen in his acceptance speech.

Soludo is expected to be sworn into office in March 2022 after the expiration of the two-term tenure of the incumbent governor, Willie Obiano, who is also of the APGA.

BREAKING: Tears Flow As Pastor Odukoya Loses Wife To Cancer

BREAKING: Tears Flow As Pastor Odukoya Loses Wife To Cancer

Tears flow among the members of Fountain of Life Church in Lagos, as Pastor Nomthi Odukoya, the wife of their Senior Pastor, Taiwo Odukoya, passed away.

Unmask NG learnt that Nomthi died in the early hours of Tuesday, November 9, 2021, two years after been diagnosed of cancer.

The church has released a statement, confirming Nomthi’s demise.

The statement read: “With deep regret and gratitude to God, we have to announce the passing of our Senior Pastor’s wife, Pastor Nomthi Odukoya.

She battled cancer for the better part of 2 years, she stood on the Word of God, and she fought.

“We loved her with all our heart, but who are we to fight with the will of God.

The truth is, at one point in our lives, we all.”

What you should know about Pastor Odukoya and his late wife

It would be recalled that in January 2021, the Odukoyas celebrated a 10-year wedding anniversary.

Exactly ten years ago, Odukoya, had got married to Nomthi in Lagos. The marriage came four years after his first wife, Pastor Bimbo Rosemary Odukoya (née Williams), died in the 2005 Sosoliso air crash, which also claimed the lives of hundreds of students of the Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja.

Before death separated them, Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya were married for 21 years. The union was blessed with three children – Tolu, Jimi, and Tobi. Ironically though, one person who was reported to have encouraged Odukoya to remarry was his late mother-in-law, Anike Williams, who passed away in 2009. His three children were also said to have pressurised him to marry another wife as well.

Atuche: Court Discharges Etuh Of Complicity In Money Laundering

Atuche: Court Discharges Etuh Of Complicity In Money Laundering

The Lagos State High Court, presided over by Justice L.A. Okunnu has discharged Mr. Thomas Etuh of complicity in the money laundering charges preferred against Messrs. Francis Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu.

The discharge order, which was made on September 21, 2021, followed an application by Etuh and others who were earlier erroneously thought to have played a part in the alleged money laundering activities of the former Managing Director of the defunct BankPHD.

But following the submission of evidence and necessary particulars necessary for their discharge, the court, having considered the affidavit evidence, ruled that Etuh and the others have been discharged and released from the effects of the earlier Orders.

It will be recalled that on August 21, 2021, the Court ordered the freezing of assets and funds amounting to N19,178,253,050 allegedly kept in 24 banks by Francis Atuche, the convicted former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB.

The banks include; Access Bank Plc, Citi Bank Ltd, Ecobank Nigeria Ltd, Fidelity Bank Nigeria Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, First City Monument Bank and Globus Bank Ltd.

Others include Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Heritage Bank Ltd, Keystone Bank Ltd, Lotus Bank Ltd, Mainstreet Bank Plc, Polaris Bank Plc, Platinum Mortgage Bank Ltd, Providus Bank Ltd and Stanbic IBTC Nigeria Ltd.

The rest are Standard Chartered Bank, Sterling Bank Plc, Titan Trust Bank Ltd, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Unity Bank Plc, Wema Bank Plc and Zenith Bank Plc.

Lateefat Okunnu, the judge who convicted the banker in June, made the order sequel to an August 17 application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Charge No. ID/1549/2011 between the Federal Government on the one hand and Mr. Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu as first and defendants.

The Court, in that ruling, also mentioned Etuh and 15 others, as role players in the charges preferred against Atuche and Anyanwu.

But by its latest discharge Order, the Court has fully absolved Etuh of any complicity in the crimes allegedly committed by the convicted bankers. Commenting on the discharge order, Etuh, who is the Chairman of TAK Agro Group expressed delight at the development, saying it has restored his integrity as a business man. He expressed his confidence on the capacity of the Nigerian judiciary to protect every segment of the Nigerian population, irrespective of social strata.

Nigerians To Pay More For Cooking Gas After 240% Increase

Scarcity Looms For Cooking Gas In Nigeria As NLNG Stops Exportation

The last has not been heard as it relates to the price of cooking gas, as there is a strong indication that it would go up further even though it had increased by 240% in 10 months.

Unmask NG understands that 12.5 kg cooking gas quantity used to sell for N3,000. This was in January 2021, but in October, it had jumped to N10,200.

In view of the latest development on the situation, Nigerians are poised to pay more for the purchase of cooking gas in the coming weeks, as importers of the commodity have halted their operations.

Why cooking gas price will increase

According to Bassey Essien, Executive Secretary, Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) who made this disclosure, the reintroduction of customs duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) on imported cooking gas were the basic reasons for the halt in operations for the importers. Hence, the likelihood of the price advancement.

Essien stated that due to the fears expressed by importers who had stopped the importation of cooking gas into the country, the commodity is now sourced from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) company that was now selling in the region of N11 million per 20 metric tonnes truck.

This, he said, was with a cumulative daily increase of N300,000 to N500,000 per 20MT truck without the imposition of VAT and customs duties.

Explaining this further, Essien stated: “The NLNG supplies cooking gas to the terminals and these terminals sell to the marketers and at times in a day, the price can go up by about three times.

Take for example, I was granting an interview on Saturday morning on this same issue and that morning some terminals were selling for N11.6 million to N11.7 million, but as I stepped out of the interview, it had increased to N12 million.

And the annoying part is that since about a week or two now, nobody has been importing gas because of the issues with customs and VAT. And this is because since the position on these issues have not been clearly stated, importers have to pause.

The customs is even clamping down on importers and so they cannot import anything, which means that the product in circulation across the country is from the NLNG.

But when there are issues like this, some unscrupulous people will want to capitalise on the situation, which they are doing, because right now, from what we’ve got, the price at which NLNG product gets to Lagos is about N7 million, but you get it at N11 million and above.

Why the importation of cooking gas is important for consumers

This publication understands that about 65% of the commodity is imported into Nigeria, while its local production is about 35%.

In view of this, the stoppage of the importation will trigger scarcity of cooking gas, which would in turn influence the increment in price.

Who Pays N-power Beneficiaries?

Who Pays N-power Beneficiaries?

For some N-power beneficiaries, Sadiya Umar Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, is the one President Muhammadu Buhari shouldered with the responsibility of sorting the payment of their monthly stipends.

But surprisingly to them, that is not the case, as the National Social Investment Management System (NASIM), under which the empowerment scheme was floated, released a statement that quashed such belief.

In the statement seen by Unmask NG, NASIM revealed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) makes the payment of beneficiaries’ stipends, and not the minister as widely claimed.

According to NASIM, this belief is why the payments of stipends are delayed sometimes.

Read NASIM’s statement on who pays N-power beneficiaries below

Dear Beneficiary,

Your payment does not come from the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, or anybody as alleged by most beneficiaries, hence the delay.

For the avoidance of doubt, your payment comes directly from the CBN upon conclusion of crucial processes.

However, we are aware of the plight and inconveniences encountered by beneficiaries in the course of service discharge and we sincerely apologise for the delay.

Payment will commence soon! Thank you.

Banking Expert Kalu Aja, on Monday, November 8, 2021, counselled couples on how they can manage their investments and other resources they have.

Got offered a really nice car at a give away price. Title was clean, went to house met Dad of owner, says son no longer needs cars. Was going to pay, but found out owner died, married for 10 years no kids, Husband family moved in, kicked out spouse, auctioning property,” part of his tweets read.

Triggered by the woman’s hurdle in the hands of her late husband’s family, Aja advised couples to buy mutual properties in their mutual names.

Buy mutual property in the mutual name. Not Mr. and Mrs. Musk. Use Mrs. Nike Musk & Mr. Ola Musk If a company put name in Articles of Association. “Wife” and “MD” are not legal or claims.

If spouse dies, don’t cry yet. Call Lawyer, Call Bank, place stop debit on all accounts. Inform all creditors and agents, publish obituary. Get death certificate and immediately start Probate or file for Letter of Administration.

Get your own lawyer. Or at least have the phone number of a lawyer. If you are asked to sign anything, from anybody, saw you can’t read because your crying. Let them drop off and come back tomorrow. Send to your lawyer to read.

Write a list of all your assets and liabilities,. Scan your C of Os, title papers, life insurance. Just save it online and with your trusted lawyer and spouse. You can place your assets in a Trust and no one can sell it and kick your spouse and kids out.

Continuing, he added: “I can tell you this, in Nigeria people can walk into courts and get Letter of Administration but hard to get title docs. Make sure you register your claim to land in the government registers. If you take a loan, make sure the bank takes lien off. Trust but verify.

Don’t make a minor next of kin. If you don’t have adult kids, or souse get a Corporate Trustee. Be clear what should happen if yo pass E.g. 1. Use this to pay for education of my child 2. Give this to this. If possible, write, and video record will. Do both. No harm.

Life Insurance is not part of will,? You can’t change the named beneficiary. Try Living Trust while still alive. Let everyone know assets have been transferred already. No fight. Even pay for your own burial, there burial insurance.

NYSC: Prisoners Are Well Fed In Nigeria Compared To Corps Members

NYSC: Prisoners Are Well Fed In Nigeria Compared To Corps Members

Prisoners in Nigeria are well fed when compared to corps members. This is according to Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

During his appearance before the House Committee on Youth Development for budget defence, Ibrahim revealed that each prisoner in the country has a daily budget of N1,000 for his or her feeding.

But for corps members, according to Ibrahim, they only get N650 per person for feeding on a daily basis.

It would be recalled that the Senate Committee on Interior, on October 27, 2021, increased the daily feeding allowance of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) from its current N450 per person to a minimum of N1,000 per day.

Officials of the NCS were in the Senate to defend the 2022 budget of the Service, where they proposed an increment of the daily feeding allowance to N750.

Luckily for them, the committee, however, described the amount as grossly inadequate and increased it in line with the current economic realities, pledging to undertake an upward review of inmates’ feeding cost from N450 to N1000 per day.

Defending why the federal government should consider increasing the current feeding allowance of corps members, Ibrahim said it’s not a fair situation for prisoners to be earning than them.

His words: “The only thing that I will tell you here is that sometimes last year, I promised the committee at the NYSC, we are putting on our thinking cap, that I don’t want us to always go cap in hand begging for funds so that, at least, we should do something to bring revenue to the table. This I did last year and we generated over N280m which we paid into the Federation Account.

Our challenge is in the area of feeding. The budgetary approval for feeding per corps member is N650, which is grossly inadequate. By the time you divide it by three meals (per day), that is N216 per meal. So, we are appealing to this committee to please help us out.

Even recently, at the Ministry of Interior, the feeding of prisoners was increased to N1,000. So, if we can feed criminals with N1,000, our graduates are putting their lives in the service of our country…I pray that this committee should please do something about it.”
