Saba Steel In Serious Trouble After Occupational Hazard Led To Its Worker’s Death

Saba Steel Nigeria Limited

Saba Steel Nigeria Limited, one of Nigeria’s largest steel product manufacturers, may henceforth have a lot to deal with, as a Twitter user called out the company over a horrific accident that cost her brother’s life.

Unmask NG learnt that the deceased passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020.

In a series of tweets on Monday, July 20, the user who’s a makeup artist and a stylist by profession, said her brother worked for Saba Steel, and an occupational hazard at his workplace, led to his untimely death.

While seeking justice for the death of her brother, the lady accused Saba Steel of trying too hard to cover her brother’s death.

“I lost my brother yesterday (July 16) to an accident at work,he works with saba steel industrial company at amuwo odofin we were not told what happened until we got to hospital his corpse was not shown to us until we start fighting with people from the company this is my brother before,” the Twitter user wrote on her page.

She continued; “The accident we were told it was a minor accident on his arm when we got to the hospital with plenty fight and shouting we were allowed to see our brother this was what we saw my brother head was splinted into two that was why they were hiding the corpse telling us we are Muslim let them dress him up for burial.

“It was a painful exit. We need people who can help us fight for our brother. They are trying to cover it up. Please tag all everybody that can fight retweet till it gets to the proper authorities because with what we are hearing and seeing.

“They want to sweep it under the rug they are telling is insurance cover him that all we are hearing my brother his a graduate no work that’s why he was working with this company they killed him and they are not telling us how it happened.”

When called for an update on the incident days after calling out Saba Steel, the Twitter user told Unmask NG that the company was yet to provide an update on what led to her brother’s death. Her words; “We still don’t know what really happened, the company is not saying anything.”

The looming consequence of this incident

It is an open secret that little problems can turnout to be big ones. However, in the case of Saba Steel and its employee, who died as a result of an occupational incident, a big problem like this can turnout to be a bigger problem.

Unmask NG understands that the severity of consequence of this incident varies, but one can’t take away the fact that the incident is detrimental to Saba Steel, and the company can no longer be trusted with the safety of its employees, particularly at its premises.

With the Twitter user already raising alarm for justice, lawsuits may be an unfortunate reality for Saba Steel. Even if the company wins the lawsuit, the costs associated with defending the suit can be steep. In this instance, a loss can mean that the company will be ordered to pay thousands or millions of dollars to the employees’ family, which can particularly ruin the company’s business.

As it is already, this incident is bringing unwanted negative publicity to Saba Steel, and it’s likely to damage the company’s reputation, which might affect its sales and profits.

About the company

Founded in 2007, the company provides steel structures to industrial sectors such as -Heavy Industries, Cement Plants, Aluminum Smelters, and Storage Depots.

Corruption Alert? FG Hands Over National Arts Theatre To CBN For Second Time In A Year

Corruption Alert? FG Hands Over National Arts Theatre To CBN For Second Time In A Year
National Arts Theatre complex

In what appeared to be a fraudulent move, the Federal Government has for the second time in less than a year, handed over the country’s National Arts Theatre to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Bankers’ Committee, for renovation.

Recall that about nine months ago, precisely October 2019, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government handed over the National Theater, located in the Iganmu area of Lagos, to the CBN and Bankers’ Committee, in order to renovate and construct it into a world-class convention centre.

In a surprise turn of events, on Sunday, July 12, 2020, this same government repeated the same action, in a similar way.

Having been handed over for renovation, a 40-acre Creative Industry Park is expected to be developed around the National Theatre. Unmask NG understands that the development was meant to boost the growth of the creative sector in diverse areas like entertainment, movie, music, fashion, and ICT.

As stated when first handed over, Governor Godwin Emefiele of the CBN, said the National Arts Theatre would be transformed into a high revenue-generating hub, adding that under the CBN Creative Industry Financing Initiative, a hub would be built around the edifice to accommodate talented youths so that they can develop their God-given gifts.

The CBN boss also expressed conviction that the project would eventually lead to the buildup of a more resilient economy.

Budget for the renovation

Although, the money budgeted for the renovation of the National Arts Theatre is yet-to-be made public. However, going by a disclosure made by Emefiele during the 11th Bankers Committee Retreat in Ogere, Ogun State, it is most likely that about N25 billion, have been spent twice to revive the moribund National Arts Theatre.

If not, why the renovation of the National Arts Theatre has been handed over twice to the CBN and Bankers’ Committee for renovation, in different ceremonies, is a question that begs for answers.

How Phyno Discovered And Signed Me -Cheque

Cheque
Cheque

Phyno’s new signee, Akanbi Bamidele Brett otherwise known as Cheque, has revealed how the indigenous rapper discovered and signed him to his label. In this interview, he discussed what his brand represents and how he got his stage name.

Your real name is Akanbi Bamidele Brett, where does the name Cheque come from?

Before I started music, I would go to an area where they freestyle and watch the guys go hard for hours, admiring every single rapper or singer that came up to do something nice, so one day I was anxious to see what it felt like to hold a mic and when I did, all that could come out of my mouth was cheque , I said this 15 times, people started laughing, and that’s how the name got stuck to me. Anytime I went back, they would say “that’s the Cheque guy coming”.

What does your brand represents as an artiste?

I am a new school artiste representing unbound diversification and versatility. I fuse all genres of music into Afro, Trap, R&B, hip-hop, and pop. I also focus on lyricism and melody.

When and at what point in your life, did you start taking music seriously?

I started making music seriously in 2015. At this time, I was in the University studying Chemical Engineering.

How were you discovered and signed by Phyno’s Penthauze Records?

In 2017, I had just finished school and I decided to come to Lagos so, through 2017-2018, I was just dropping freestyles on social media. This fateful day, I had dropped one freestyle for Ajigijaga reminisce’s contest and a couple of days later, I got a dm that surprised me. It was from Phyno. The rest, as they say, is history. I wouldn’t say I have challenges, it’s been more like a blessing in disguise for me to be able to absorb all the energy I can into making music.

You just dropped an EP Titled Razor, why Razor? What motivated the choice of songs?

The title of my EP is Razor because my intentions with this Ep is to cut though different genre of music and culture. The choice of songs however, came by just picking one or two from different genres of songs I have. I still have much more in store for the world to enjoy

What have the challenges been so far for you, especially during this pandemic and how have you been overcoming?

The pandemic has disrupted a lot of activities for everyone especially in the entertainment industry.

It has disrupted studio recordings, video shoots, I can’t go out as I want, it’s even affecting music promotions as much can’t be done on the street due to the social distancing rules.

I have been making sure I do all the best I can to get through this stage, I set up a creation corner in my house where I write, record and do what makes me happy, which is music.

How do you think artistes and labels’ issue can be properly addressed to make the industry progressive?

I believe proper communication is key to a good relationship. That way, both parties can understand their goals and stay level headed as they both strive to achieve the agreed upon set goals.

If you had the power to influence a change in the Nigerian music industry, what would it be?

The industry definitely needs more new artistes with great talent. That’s the major change I would love because the Nigerian music industry is a multi-million industry and the more new artistes we have, the greater our chances to take over the world and make our voices heard.

The Nigerian MusicSphere has a lot of young guys making waves, what are you bringing different to the table?

I bring an infinite vibe and mix of different genres. You can’t resist that.

Olamide and Phyno have made a name in the entertainment industry not just in Nigeria but Africa and beyond, what would you like to imbibe from their growth?

The level of consistency when it comes to Olamide and Phyno consistency is both unmatched and admirable. That consistency is what I envision for myself and hope to achieve.

Airtel Nigeria Enmeshed In Fraud Controversy

Airtel Nigeria Limited
Airtel Nigeria Limited

Airtel Nigeria, a telecommunication company is presently enmeshed in a fraud controversy, as one of its customer care representatives, Jeremiah Mustapha, was recently sentenced to a five years’ imprisonment for facilitating a N2.2 million fraud.

Unmask NG learnt that Mustapha conspired with one Nurudeen Salimu, a fraudster, to dupe one of Airtel Nigeria subscribers, Kazeem Dele, through the use of his phone number, 08023843032.

Mustapha, according to a prosecutor, Cyriacus Osuji, unlawfully disconnected all network services linked to the number without the consent of the owner.

“The number swap aided the second defendant to steal the sum of N2.2m from the Skye Bank account of the complainant. The second defendant forged the signature of the complainant, falsely represented himself as the owner of the account, and withdrew the said sum from the account,” the prosecutor was quoted as saying.

Why this matter

With this development, Unmask NG understands that Nigeria’s telco system’s vulnerability to fraud has once again been highlighted in a focal point of debate. Telco employees play a key role as far as customer experience is concerned. They are a group that directly interacts with customers about their service disputes, amongst others. It is in this light that one needs to take into cognisance that telco employees set the stage for higher business performance.

In its effects, fraud reduces organisational assets and increases its liabilities. With regards to telco industry, it may bring crises to the company, impede the growing status of the company, and ultimately lead to the company’s failure.

Woli Arole Aims Global Recognition, Says Nigerian Comedy Industry Is Evolving

Woli Arole
Woli Arole

Nigerian comedian, Toyin Bayegun popularly known as Woli Arole, has expressed his desire to be recognised as a global star.

In an interview with Unmask NG, Woli Arole said the Nigerian comedy industry is fast-growing. And as a result, being a global brand as a Nigerian comedian, for him, is achievable.

He said, “It’s growing actually. We are evolving, because years to come, we will be hearing some other names as well. There’s a Yoruba saying ‘Igbakon lo, Igbakon bo’ (Time comes and goes). We have more Comedy Merchants, so it’s growing. The popular ones we know today didn’t build their name in one day. The Comedians we know today, some of them started years ago, so we can’t compare their pace to our pace. It’s gradual.”

Woli Arole
Woli Arole

When asked if his frequent usage of Yoruba language won’t limit his admiration to be a global brand, Woli Arole explained that the language of choice doesn’t matter.

“Limitation is relative. The language of choice doesn’t matter. Haven’t you heard a song that you don’t know what the artist is saying, example, ‘Gangnam style’, people watch India movie even when they don’t know what they are saying. So why can’t I promote Africa.

“Yoruba language is a rich culture; I have fans that are Igbos and Hausa. Though I speak English well, I want people to know this guy has a strong Yoruba root.

Olamide Bado speaks Yoruba, yet shut-down London, shut down America. King Sunny Ade sings in Yoruba, and he is one of the 100 greatest world musicians and also a Grammy nominee, 9ice performed at Mandela’s birthday, so there’s richness in our culture. The fact that I want to connect to the global stage doesn’t mean I should lose the originality of my culture.

“Though I’m a dual, I do English and Yoruba, what I mean is that, if I’m called in America, I can teach them Yoruba, and make them say ‘Ekaro’ (Good morning) after me. So I’m a custodian of my culture, I’m an ambassador of my culture.

“So I can teach Americans my language, Tourists can come to Nigeria because of me. I’ve seen people whose kids are learning the Yoruba language because of me. There’s nothing like your culture,” he told Unmask NG.

How COVID-19 Crippled Nigeria’s Entertainment Industry -RMD

Richard Mofe-Damijo
Richard Mofe-Damijo

Nollywood veteran actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), in a recently-held interview, revealed that the raging COVID-19 has crippled every sub-sector of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

According to him, movie-making, music, cinemas, comedy, amongst others, have indefinitely been shutdown due to the infectious disease.

“Imagine how Nigeria has fared in the last two months, who tells? Look at my office, film productions, cinema houses, look at the amount of investment these guys in Filmone have put together, and you just sit at home, and you are looking at all the buildings and they are all empty. There are people who are working in these places that you have to decide whether or not to let them go, and rehire them three to four months later,” he said of how the entire entertainment industry has been crippled since the country’s index case of COVID-19.

Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD)
Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD)

On what he’s been engaged with since the country has been on lockdown, the sort after actor said he’s been relaxing, and lending his voice to inform and educate the public on the need to be hygienic, which he said will curtail the spread of the disease.

His words; “You can see my bears. I’m still under quarantine. Yes, there is some kind of partial lift on the lockdown, but my office is still not operating at full scale. All the productions I was involved in, have all been cancelled, some of them have been moved to next year.

“I think the earlier I can feel comfortable to get to work will probably be August or October 2020. Most of the things I am doing now is totally different from what I have been doing in the past years. It is a hard reset moment, where we’ve all needed to pause, we’ve examined whatever we think we are doing.

“It will be a sin of me if I have a voice, and I’m not using it. I mean there is no recording I will say No to as far as the COVID-19 fight is concerned. You might not have the kind of money Dangote has or Femi Otedola, or Adenuga, but what else do you have? In my place, they say when you don’t have money to contribute to your in-law’s burial, you work with your body. So the ones you can’t do with your money, you do with your body, voice, and whatever it is that God has given you. If you are a celebrity, you are part of the community you live in, so if just being seen will encourage people to participate in what will make life a bit better for all of us, then, by all means, it’s your responsibility to do that.”
